Most people don’t understand the difference between leaders and managers, probably because the two roles often overlap.
Imagine a fishing boat.
The workers are out on the deck, casting lines and catching fish.
The managers are behind them, keeping everyone stocked with bait, fixing broken equipment and helping everyone make as much progress as possible. Managers facilitate progress.
The leader, in contrast, is up in the wheelhouse. She is the person who decides where to take the boat and which fish populations to pursue. Leaders determine where an organization should be heading.
Are you a leader or a manager or both?
